Calcutta ,now Kolkata in West Bengal capital city was once capital of British India and also considered as second biggest and important city of British empire.
During its golden days from 19th century to early 20th century there were lots of constructions done by British for their administrative needs .Most of those buildings are still there and also still used for government offices.
Internet is full of such old photo of buildings .During my last visit of the city I had shortlisted few photos and try to click same building so that can compare between yesterday and today.
Dalhousie Square (now BBD area) and Esplanade were the centre of administration and leisure for British and all photos are from the same area. Next time will try to cover North and/or South Kolkata.

Metropolitan Building near Chowrangee was once started as Whiteway Laidlaw departmental store, later post independence Metropolitan Insurance taken its ownership and now its LIC office but still called as Metropolitan building.

Writers building was administrative headquarter of East India Company and later British Government, still its occupied by many West Bengal government departments.

Hindustan Building at Central avenue was once served as US army office during second world war, now it has LIC office.

The older photo looks of sometime pre independence ,may be of 1930s or 40s.
